Video (German): Of Bumpers and Meatballs
What’s yummy food got to do with car production? In order for it to come out hot and just as ordered, you’ll have to do a lot of pre-planning: What color? Do you want leather seats? The tough bumper or the sporty one? The more the production process is streamlined, the cheaper the car will be.
Students at the Hasso-Plattner-Institute in Potsdam, Germany are developing software to optimize this process. And it works both in the assembly line and the kitchen!

The tricky part about this project: we needed to explain how clever planning would benefit the car industry without actually showing any car production. We found a way to make the video not only work, but actually make it more appealing and understandable than going into a production plant.

Was hat leckeres Essen mit der Produktion von Autos zu tun? Damit das Auto so aussieht wie vom Kunden bestellt, muss schon lange vor der Produktion richtig geplant werden: Welche Farbe? Ledersitze? Frontscheinwerfer mit oder ohne Extras? Je optimaler dieser Ablauf ist, desto günstiger wird auch das Auto.
Studenten des Hasso-Plattner-Instituts haben eine Software für die optimale Planung entwickelt. Das System funktioniert in der Werkhalle genauso wie in der Küche.
Entstanden im Juli 2014 im Rahmen des Projekts zukunftscampus-hpi.de an der EMS – Electronic Media School als Co-Autor, Kameramann und Co-Cutter.
Die Herausforderung des Projekts war, die Vorteile cleverer Produktionsplanung in der Automobilbranche zu zeigen, ohne die Automobilbranche selbst im Bild. Über die Analogie zur Küche haben wir eine Lösung gefunden, die den Beitrag noch ansprechender macht, als eine Produktionshalle.
