Add-on: 12 Lessons from the Jungle

#1: The wettest spot in the jungle is always behind that big log you jumped, followed by your shoe that stepped over and into the puddle.

#2: The other wettest spot is between your back and your backpack

#3: After it rains in the rainforest, it becomes a floodforest and creeks turn into rivers.

#4: If you have to cross a river - formally creek - on your trek, #2 beats #1 although your shoes might be just as wet!

#5 If the river is too deep to walk through, wrap you pack in a plastic bag, use it as a float and swim!

#6 If you swim / struggle / balance over or through a river, hold on to all your personal belongings, especially hats, glasses, and other accessories. You will NOT be able to find them in the muddy water.

#7 Porcupines like chicken curry.

#8 Water for cooking is always to be taken from upstream....

#9 He who has gas, travels at the end of the pack.

#10 Leeches are friends, not food. Treat them with respect, give them nourishment, don't wear clothes where they sat for the next half an hour to avoid blood stains.

#11 ants are food, not friends. Make them immovable first, then pluck the abdomen for a refreshing, lime-tasting snack. Some detect hints of mango or avocado.

#12 There is no use in cleaning or drying anything (unless food-related) until you are sure you are out of the jungle. All out!
