Open House Journalism – Twitter Profile: John A. Byrne

This profile was written for the University of Washington Twitter Book.
John A. Byrne, if you read this, please answer our Q&A!

John A. Byrne is one of the most open journalists I have found on Twitter. He allows people to peek into his virtual newsroom and takes their suggestions.

John A Byrne is the Editor-in-Chief of Business week and an outspoken fan of Twitter. In a video on the Business Week website, he talks about the people he follows as well as his own use of Twitter. This video is what brought me to his profile in the first place. The reason? John A Byrne is a Journalist who gives a real inside scoop – he shares with Twitter what will be BusinessWeek’s news of tomorrow!

John A Byrne opens the newsroom to the reader, but he forgot to water the plants!

Is CNN Still Missing the Conversation? – Twitter Profile: Rick Sanchez, CNN

This profile was written for the University of Washington Twitter Book.

I analyzed the profile of news anchor Rick Sanchez for the UW Twitter Book. As Social Media flagship for CNN, my expectations for his use of Twitter were high. While his personal and human voice makes for a pleasant feed, it keeps me wondering if CNN is still missing out on the conversation on Twitter.

CNN is one of the most influential providers of news online (as they claim on their Breaking News Twitter account).
While CNN has embraced a number of uncommon technologies, #cnnfail has damaged CNN’s public and especially online image. When the criticism hit CNN, Rick Sanchez proactively talked about CNN’s coverage of the #iranelection. Sanchez is thus the most noticeable non-robotic CNN News provider tweeting, although other individuals have larger followings (namely Larry King & Dr. Sanjay Gupta)

Class Notes: Journalists on Twitter – Brian M. Westbrook & Linda Thomas

Notes on Class Speakers – July 28th, 2009

@BMW

  • Social Media guy for Sandusky Radio
  • Radio shows on Twitter span a wide range. Good example: @TheSquare , which brings its Twitter to the News broadcast, like CNN does it now.
  • You can’t force people into using Social Media. You get the most useful information when people are actually motivated and interested.
  • Spent a lot of time to create and manage his brand.

Linda Thomas @thenewschick

  • Did not know what to do with Twitter at first, then approached it as a broadcaster
  • “On Twitter it is not about who you are, but about what you have to say”; then I just changed to communicating
  • you don’t own your brand like a news anchor doesn’t own credibility. All you own is your name, and you can build credibility, but you can lose it just as fast. You can control it to some extent with what you are tweeting, but you can’t control the outcome

Class Notes: Government Speaker

Jeremy Bertrand, Wa State DOT, @jbertrand or @wsdot

  • WA State DOT started web2.0 on their website after heavy snowstorm for people to vent –> allowing user feedback on the agency performance
  • Eventually the blog became too busy; expansion to several other online platforms (Flickr, Twitter)
  • Traffic and weather updates became community effort: “Now, before I go internal and post an update, I check with the community”
  • By now, you can text WSDOT a certain code and they send you back road conditions for
  • “Social Media Policy”? There is no official policy. It is much more than just a rule book! Most of it is common sense
  • –> Organic growth of the community while the agency was opening up generally

Q&A:

If wrong: corrections will beposted, but it is very hard to correct after retweets!

  • Identity/Transperancy: Currently only two people tweeting trying to have a singular voice. Poll shows: users don’t care to know who is behind the scenes. Information vs. conversation?
  • time: about 2-3 hours a day – time is lost on looking for the external and internal websites. So the eyes are not on the bigger picture.
  • Business continuity is important: if the site can’t handle the traffic for some reason, redirect to other free services who are able to handle it.
